Want to know a top tip to improve your pronunciation, fluency and confidence? It’s easy! Record your voice!
Listen & Read
A great way to improve your English pronunciation is to record your voice …
I know for many of you, the thought of recording yourself will make you want to crawl under your covers in bed and not come out! It’s strange and uncomfortable at first, and you will think that you sound funny, but it is the best and fastest way to improve your pronunciation.
That’s why I’m going to ask you to give it a try!
I want you to know that I’m the first person who hates doing this! I would rather eat my own arm than listen to my own voice or watch myself on video. I’m very shy and it does not come easy to me!
BUT …. I’ve had to get over* this fear.
Get over* (phrasal verb) this phrasal verb has a few different meanings, but in this context it means to find a way to solve or deal with a difficult problem
If I want to create the same rapport online that I have with my students in the classroom, I’m not going to be able to do that if you don’t hear my voice or occasionally see my face.
So I started recording audio to put into my lessons and share on the EDA blog. It then became something so natural that I don’t even think about it anymore. It really doesn’t bother me at all.
Why am I telling you this?
Because practising this will benefit you in the long run*!
in the long run* (expression) over or after a long period of time; eventually
The practice of recording yourself is a fantastic way to improve your speaking skills and pronunciation awareness.
And at the end of the day, you only ever have to share the audio with me – your teacher, so there is absolutely no need for feeling any embarrassment or anxiety.
What you’ll find is this: you’ll do it once, you’ll do it twice and then, by the third time you do it, you’ll think nothing of it.
You’ll actually see that it’s quite good fun and most importantly, you’ll see how much your English starts to improve!
What’s more, when you send me your recording, you’ll get a personal audio back from me with feedback. I’ll make suggestions on how you can improve your pronunciation, your fluency or your vocabulary and help you get that bit closer to sounding as natural and confident as possibile when you speak English …
So, the question is – are you up for it?!
